I have written regional histories, travel pieces, profiles, web sites, blogs, books, magazine articles, speeches, technology anatomies, television commercials and theatre reviews. I love the art of story-telling and I've taught classes at UNCA's Reuter Center based on the Moth idea of "true stories told live."
Over a thirty year career in journalism and advertising, I have led creative teams that have won over a thousand ADDY awards, an international EFFIE for advertising effectiveness and inclusion in Print Magazine's regional design issue, Communications Arts Advertising Annual and Adweek Portfolio. In 2015, I received the American Advertising Federation's Silver Medal Award for creative excellence and lifelong service to Asheville and the Western North Carolina community.
Recent projects include development of a film about Asheville's public art trail (working with director Erin Derham and released in 2016); writing the accommodations sections of Biltmore Estate's web site (including its new hotel); research, writing and directing a timeline history exhibit (centered on eliminating racism) for the Asheville YWCA; organizing and authoring a book about the history of Christ School in Asheville, with emphasis on the school's chapel; and editing, writing and providing photography for βIn Pursuit of a Greater Good,β the post-WWII history of small communities in the mountains of Western North Carolina (published in 2021).
My sketchbook illustrations have been featured in a number of Asheville galleries and publications.
Special clients of long duration over the years include: Biltmore Estate, Asheville (Tourism Development), Grandfather Mountain, HandMade in America, Square D industrial products, Milliken & Company, the University of Tennessee (Knoxville), Muddy Sneakers experiential learning for middle schoolers, and a host of non-profits devoted to the environment, the arts, and economic development.
I am pleased to entertain requests for proposals involving creative development and writing.
